Most American people love to choose it over other food. For me, I love fast food, too. For example, I love pizza and hamburgers. I love these kinds of food because these kinds of food are not public in my country and I seldom eat them. I am interested in fast food. There are three reasons that I love to eat fast food. First, fast food can be made in a short time. I can eat it as soon as possible when I order it. Next, fast food includes rich materials. These materials are new things for me because I never eat them. Finally, there are many different kinds of fast food in America. Fast food supplies many flavors for people to choose. I can choice many things that I want to eat. However, not every kind of fast food is what I like to eat because some fast food is unhealthy. For instance, fried chicken involves too much oil. I will not choose fast food that is fried already. There are so many kinds of food in china. Different places have different food. North China is famous for spicy food. People in the south always cook food not greasy or strongly flavored. My hometown is in south China so that I don’t like too spicy food. Sometimes cooker will put a lot of sauce and oil so it has sweet-smelling, but few people can not adapt to this kinds of food. Chinese people not only eat rice but also eat noodle, especially for in north China. Further more, people in the north plant wheat, but people in the south plant paddy. It’s easy to cook and delicious. First what I need is Kim-chi. Kim-chi has changed its taste since it was done being made. The best time to eat Kim chi is the middle time between flat taste and sour taste. If Kim chi’s smell is too sour, you should throw it away. And I need boiled rice, onion, Kim and butter. Kim is a kind of seaweed that looks like black paper, and that most American know by the word “Nori”, but that word is Japanese. Kim is Korean, because the person who made Kim was named Kim. Also, Kim is the most common family name in Korea. And last thing is meat. I prefer tuna, but you can put in ham, turkey or whatever you want.

Now, let’s start to cook. First, put butter in a big pan, and put in Kim chi and onion. When they are boiled, you should put in tuna. And then, if the tuna is boiled, you could put in the rice. The point is that you should put more Kim chi juice in while your cook. You can control the spicy taste by yourself. If you put a lot of Kim chi juice in, it would be spicy. And you should mix it well, so every grain of rice color would change to orange. The last part of the cooking is the Kim. You can mix the Kim in the rice. Then, it’s done. If you like fried egg, you can put it on top of the Kim chi fried rice. It would look like Kim chi omelet.

Pani-Puri

This is the most favorite dish of Indians, Pani-puri. I think almost all children like the dish, because mothers tend to cook it for their children and it is a famous of food which children like.

Cooking Time!!

I am a good cook, so I can cook a lot of dishes. Then, you need to fry the rice with ketchup and some vegetables such as diced onion, carrot or green pepper. When you finish frying the rice, you will make an omelet. My mother always cooks for me. However, I like cooking. So, sometimes I learn cooking from my mother. It is the first time to learn how to cook a chocolate cake. It is really easy to cook because we use an IH cooking heater made from Amway. It is really convenient. I need butter, flour, chocolate syrup, and eggs for cooking a chocolate cake. First, I warm a frying pan on the IH cooking heater. Then, I put a little butter on the frying pan. After the butter melts, I turn off the IH cooking heater. Next, I add eggs and flour to the frying pan and mix them up. After mixing them up, I add chocolate syrup. Just mix them again. After that, I need to hit the frying pan in order to draw the air from all the flour. Finally, set the IH cooking heater to “Cake.” Just wait for a while. That’s it! Sometimes I bring the chocolate cake that I make to my friends' birthday party. My friends look like happy. I also become happy.

PAV- BHAJI

Who doesn't like Pav Bhaji? From kids to adults, everyone just loves this street food and it is thus always a hit with the whole family. It is from Western India. I love it mainly because it is a snap to add zippy flavor to fresh veggies. Pav Bhaji is such an excellent meal extender that I always make it whenever I feel my menu needs a boost. To make this dish you will need potatoes, carrot, beans, cauliflower, mutter, capsicum, tomato, onion, paprika, red chili powder, garam masal powder, ginger garlic paste, milk, pav bhaji masala, tomato paste, sugar, green chilies, chopped onions, lemon sliced, salt as per taste, butter and pav buns. Pressure-cook all the veggies (carrot+potato+capsicum+mutter+beans) except the cauliflower with enough salt. Mash them nicely and keep it aside. Now Microwave nicely chopped cauliflower for just 2 minutes and keep it aside. In a heavy bottomed pan that has little butter/oil, add the sliced onions + sugar and sauté it until transparent. To this add Ginger-Garlic paste and chopped green chilis along with the masala powders and sauté it for another 2 minutes. Now add nicely chopped tomatoes and the tomato paste and sauté it for another 2 minutes. Add in all the mashed veggies along with half cooked cauliflower and enough water and milk, cook on medium flame for 7 to 8 minutes with stirring and mashing of the veggies here and there. Have them hot with some fresh chopped onions and lemon juice along with nicely roasted Pav Buns.

How to Cook Green Curry

Foreigners know Thailand from tourist spots such as Phuket, and Pattaya. However, Thai food is one of the most famous kinds of food in the world. We can see Thai food everywhere around the world. The Thai government tries to encourage people to run Thai restaurants in other countries. Thai food that foreigners like to eat is Pad Thai, Nam Prig Ka Pi, Red Curry, and Green Curry. Today, I’m going to teach you how to cook Green Curry with curry that you can buy from the International Grocery stores. First, you have to stir-fry curry with the oil 2-3 minutes. Then, put some chicken in and keep stir-frying until the chicken is almost cooked. Next, put a little coconut milk in and stir-fry for 2 minutes. After that, add about 2 cups of water and wait until it boils. Then, put in green beans, and add some sugar, fish sauce, and kaffir-lime. If it tastes good, you have to eat it with some hot rice. It’s very easy to cook Green Curry. Not only Thai people can cook Thai food, but also foreigners can do it.

Pan-Broiled Rice Cake

I am going to talk about how to make Pan-Broiled Rice Cake. It is called “Tteok-Bok-Gi” in Korean. Before making it, we have to prepare some ingredients. These are rice cakes, a cabbage, an onion, a carrot, a green onion, boiled fish pastes, an egg, Korean hot pepper paste, sugar, starch syrup, and water. Firstly, wash the rice cakes and remove water of rice cakes. Secondly, slice vegetables so they are easy to eat. Thirdly, boil water. Fourthly, add Korean hot pepper paste, sugar, and starch syrup in water. Finally, parch the vegetables and other ingredients with sauce. Now you can enjoy pan-broiled rice cake. The most important thing is that you should add rice cakes at the end. I wanted them to eat Japanese food made by real Japanese. First, we went to Wal-Wart to buy ingredients. We need potatoes, onions, calottes, beef, and curry roux. You can put in chicken instead of beef. Ingredients are very simple and you can make it easily. After shopping, prepare one pot, pour water into half of the pot and heat it. Next, peel potatoes, onions, and calottes. You can put and boil beef first in the hot water while you are peeling. Finishing peeling vegetables, you put potatoes first, because it takes longer till they are tender. Then you can put other vegetables at the same pot. You can let it look for about 10 minutes to make them tender. After that you take the curry roux and melt it in the same pot. Even if you melt all the curry roux, you have to keep heating and mixing ingredients and curry roux. When the roux is pulpy, you can finish heating and pour the curry roux in on the rice on your dish.

Cooking

Some people are interested when they are cooking. Why do I like Japanese curry so much? Besides being delicious, it is also easy to cook. When my mother was cooking this food, I always stood beside her and watched her how she cooked Japanese curry. The required ingredients are chicken, potatoes, carrots, an onion, and a box of curry. The optional ingredient is a tomato. Tomato is one of vegetables that prevent cancer. It is such a healthy vegetable for us. Actually, it is difficult for us to taste tomato after cooking, but all nutrition is inside the food. That is why my mother chooses tomato as well. How do I cook Japanese curry? We just cut everything, chicken, potatoes, carrots, an onion and a tomato. Next, we just place everything that we cut into a big pot. We should at least cook it an hour and wait until all foods become soft. The last step is to put a box of curry in and cook it until the pieces of curry disappear. It is quite easy to cook. Everything we need is to cut and cook. We do not have to use any extra sauces. It is easy and delicious. Our country’s food is usually hot and spicy food, so when we eat the food, we can make sound, when we eating some foods, except in a place that requires politeness and manners. Also, our country respects old people. So when we have a meal with old people, we are waiting until old people take the spoon first. That is a big different thing. And we don’t pay a tip for serving. Also, our country’s main food is rice, so many other extra foods follow when we have a meal. Also in our country are use chopsticks. In the USA, the famous food maybe is fast food like KFC and PizzaHut. And Americans want to be fast, so they eat food and need to save time, so fast food is very famous in the USA. Now China has a long history, so about eating culture, it has a long history too. In my country, we believe people think eating is the most important thing. And our food needs to be nice, so the cook needs more time. If you go to a restaurant, the service will look like it does in America, but you can see some restaurants which have a long history; the waiters’ clothes still look like old China’s clothes, and most of the food uses a traditional way to cook. So the food is very good. East, west, north and south have different kinds of food; they cook it using a different way. But Americans do not know this. This is two countries’ eating cultures. It has a lot of different things.

Food

To eat food in a nightmarket is a special eating culture in Taiwan. It provides various local foods, cheap price, and shopping fun. People enjoy not only delicious food, but also entertainment. Why is it so popular? Cheap is the best answer, because there are over a hundred vendors to compete together. Consumers, furthermore, can purchase a variety of daily goods in different styles of shopping malls. On the other hand, eating food in the USA is expensive and inconvenient. People can not taste and choose various foods in the same place. Also, these restaurants always sell fast food, so we can not find many vegetable meals there. When finishing eating, people must add the tax and pay the tip for service. The phenomenon will not be displayed in Taiwan. Following these reasons, it is different manner to eat food between Taiwan and USA.

Eating culture

There are many different things between the USA and Korea. I think the most different thing is we do not have tip culture in Korea. We have to pay a 15% service charge in America, so when I came here I felt strange. Food style is very different, so we use chopsticks, but the Americans use forks. Also Koreans do not use knife much. There are so many languages. So we have all different styles of eating due to the geography of India. In my state, my culture of eating is to sit on the ground, eat with the family, eat with hands and talk about the whole day’s activities whatever we have done. We believe that eating with hands gives more satisfaction. We have different types of food served with different styles. We have a custom that whoever comes to our home as a guest he or she doesn’t go back without eating. India is also famous for its hospitality. In other states of India they have different cultures; in one they eat on banana tree’s leaves. It is totally different from the USA. In USA, people always use silverware and there is no custom to eat together with the family. People mostly eat fast foods. Life is busier than in India, so people don't get time to eat together. One of the differences between us is that Japanese usually use chopsticks, but Americans do not. Actually, we often use fork and spoon, but we use chopsticks all most all the time. By the way, if we, Japanese, cannot use them well, it sometimes makes people uncomfortable. This is because we think it is assumed that we can use chopsticks perfectly. Second point is we usually have soup while making sounds and it is polite, but Americans think it is rude. This is because Japanese believe that the sound makes people, perhaps the host, happy. We express our satisfaction with sound. On the other hand, Americans have soup without sound. Sometimes, I forget the American style, so I have to study American eating culture more.

Eating Culture

EAP2
Airi Murasaki
04/17/2008

Food
I am so interested in eating culture between Japan and America. Basically, we eat different food every day, and people in Japan use chopsticks but people in America use fork and knife. Thus, there are some curious differences that I know. First, in America, it is bad manner eating with sounds of the mouth. In Japan, we can eat only noodle with sounds. The sounds make us hungry. It is not a matter of manners. Second, when we have meals at a restaurant, we don’t pay tip at all in Japan. On the other hand, in America, people should pay a tip for the clerk at most restaurant. If the clerk works really well for customers, people will pay more on the tip for the clerk. I think it is a very good system. For example, if clerks serve kindly and efficiently, the customer feels good and wants to come to the restaurant again. And then, the clerk can get a lot of tips and the restaurant gets good evaluation of customers. I suppose that we should follow this culture of America, because if the clerks service well, they can get a lot of tips and the restaurant’s reputation will be good. Third, American service is more friendly. Japanese service is more polite. These cause cultural differences. We should learn both cultures and compare them. I want to know more about eating culture.

Grocery

My interesting place to buy food is the international grocery market. First, even when you get food at a restaurant, usually people wait until others get food. If they say that it is fine to eat, and not let the food cool down, you can start to eat the food. You say “itadakimasu” before starting to eat food. This means thank you for giving and making food. If there are chopsticks and it’s a small bag, you take the chopsticks out and break them. Then you can start to eat. When you eat rice and food that is used with a rice bowl and cup, you eat holding it. You bring foods to your mouth. If you are drinking alcohol or sake while eating, you should pour the drink for others. It is a very important manner. If you notice someone’s drink is empty, you ask him or her pour if you can theirs drink naturally. Did you enjoy eating? It sounds strict, but relaxed. After you eat, you put chopsticks back in a bag and say “gochisousamadeshita”. It means the same as the first phrase. It is appreciation that you are given food.

Dining Manners for Jainists

India is known for its culture, manners, respect, and hospitality. Actually I don’t have enough words to explain my country. Dining is very famous in India. There are different cultures for different religions. I am Jainist (Hindu) and we are very particular about how we eat. We should sit Indian style on a small table. We should have another small table of the same size in front of us, so we can put our plate on that small table. We should start eating at the same time as all of our family members. We can’t speak while we are eating. We shouldn’t leave any food on our plate after completing our meal. We should clean our plate with drinking water and we should also drink that same water. Nowadays most of the people do not follow these particular customs; because of modern culture people don’t care about elite culture and their traditional religions.

Different eating culture

How is eating culture different in USA and your country?

Korean’s have special etiquette; when Koreans have meals, younger people should wait before until the older person starts eating. In my country, food is always served with respect and with manners. Women usually cook food in my hometown and take care of the family. We have different kinds of food in my country. Most of our food comes from farms, and the rest is imported from Europe. We have different manners and traditions for some special food that we follow for some tradition. For some example, if a couple gets married, we have different tributes that follow different kinds of manners and traditions. So, I think that, food differs from one country to the other.
But in the United States, people do not care about food, even if they love it. They don't know how to cook, and they depend on fast food. However, there are a few of them that know how to cook, and it is very rare. One of them is about manner in restaurants. In Korea, when we go to the restaurant, we can have a seat anywhere we want, and we call a server to order foods. However, in the USA, we have to wait for a server, and we should follow the server to have a seat. And then, we still wait for the server to order foods. I heard that it's not a good manner to call a server anytime we want. Moreover, the most different thing is the tip culture. Their income is not good in the USA, so they need some tips. They might be nice to customers because of tips. They have their tables and they take care of everything for their tables. In Korea, usually, they don't have their tables, and they share the tables to take care of. There are no tips in Korea, but their income is not bad.

Eating Culture

There are many cultures in the world, and every country is different in many ways. One of those ways is how eating culture is. In my culture, most of the people eat without table manners. They put the food over a piece of plastic, and they sit beside each other and eat. Some people love this way to eat; however, other people have table manner, and use them it when they eat. Also they can eat without a spoon. In US culture, people eat at the table only, and they eat using spoons. They cannot eat without using a spoon. If you go to a restaurant to take your breakfast, lunch, or your dinner, you will not see any difference between the two cultures. First, Korean society has some classes of age. Korean should respect people who are older than them. So, Koreans has many terms of respect. In the meal, people should wait until the oldest person starts eating. This is a kind of traditional culture, so many people don’t do it that much, now. But in the United States, people can start eating whenever they want. Next, tables are different. Now, there are many western cultural things in Korea, but traditionally, Koreans have lived sitting on the floor. We didn’t have any kind of furniture like bed or dinner table. A Korean traditional table’s legs are short. So everyone eats meals sitting around the table on the floor. Of course, in the inside of a house, people should take off their shoes. But in America, they are just sitting around a table, which has long leg with wearing their shoes. Last is a way. In America, they sitting around big table, and take off foods from its plates to their own plates. They have kinds of buffet in their home. But ways in Korea are totally different. Everyone sits around a smaller table than in America, and the host gives a bowl with steamed rice to each person. Also, many side dishes are on the table. Side dishes are usually from 3 to 15 dishes or more. And everyone picks whatever foods they want together. Whenever they want to eat, they just pick. So, sometimes spoons or chopsticks hit each other, but nobody cares. I think this culture is the only one thing in Asia. This way is a kind of strange way, but I like it. This way makes people become intimate.

How is eating culture different in the USA and Japan?

Eating culture has big differences between USA and Japan. In Japan, we should finish our own dish; if you leave some food, it is rude in my country. However, if I finish my dish in America, the host will serve more food even if I’m full. When I went to Britain, I thought I had to finish my dish, and I kept going up to the limit of my stomach. I told my American friends that story, and she said Japanese eating custom is pretty strange, because Britain and America have the same eating cultures. I leaned eating custom from Britain and America, but still I feel bad when I throw away the last of my food. The biggest difference is that Japanese use chopsticks. I used chopsticks in America sometimes at the Japanese, Chinese, and Thai restaurants. I didn’t know some Americans could use chopsticks skillfully. One day my friend, who is coming to Japan soon, asked me if Japan had knives and forks, because he didn’t have confidence in using chopsticks. I almost died of laughing, and I thought he is native American.

Oh! I will definitely scream when I go back to Japan and eat Japanese food.

My Favorite Restaurant

My favorite restaurant in my country is a Japanese noodle restaurant. The restaurant is in front of my grandparents’ house and the owner is my grandparents’ friend. I have eaten dinner there since I was a child, and my family likes the noodles there, too. If I can go to the restaurant now, I will choose hot noodles. The noodle is very famous around there and it has been introduced in a local magazine. Every day many people wait to eat it and other kinds of noodle of lunchtime and dinnertime. There are boiled egg, seaweed, sliced beef, and mushroom in the noodle. The boiled egg is not so hard, but it is not raw and the taste is perfect. I have tried to make the same one many times in my home, but it was very difficult and I couldn’t make it. The soup is very hot, so I can get hot after finishing eating it. I especially like to eat it in winter.

My favorite restaurant in Korea

The name of the restaurant is Park, which is in Seoul. If you go there, you can eat Thai food. I normally order curry crab and cream shrimp with grapefruit. This restaurant is quite different tasting from any other Thai restaurants’ foods. I have been to many Thai restaurants, but I like this one the most. I like not only those two foods but also some other Thai foods, but unfortunately I don’t remember the name of those foods. I have been to Thai restaurants twice in USA; one place was in Carbondale and one place was in Chicago; however, it wasn’t as delicious as what I had in Korea. I really would love to visit Thailand and eat real Thai foods. If I were able to have dinner tonight in Park, I would order those foods that I mentioned before. The one problem I have got is their foods are really expensive. If two people eat dinner together, the cost will be 200 dollars!!

Favorite Food

If I could go to Japan and eat my favorite food, I would want to go to a Korean BBQ restaurant. Thai food should have more ingredients which she can’t find in America. If I could go to ChiangMai, my hometown, now, I would go to ThaNom restaurant. This restaurant is very famous for its Thai food. Many Thai people and foreigners like the real Thai taste from here. If I could go to this restaurant now, I would order many kinds of Thai food such as Green curry, roast sweet pork, MamPrig KaPi, and Thai dessert. First, In America, people always eat the fast food that has no nutrition. Some of them were fried in deep fat or oil so that the nutrition was lost. However, in China people also eat the fast food daily and it is different from fast food in the US; the bulk of if is full of nutrition. These foods do not have so much oil; people always eat them in their breakfast, such as the bun stuffed with minced vegetables, meat or sugar inside. Then, most American fast food is not good for health; It can lead to cancer if you eat it every day for a long time; also, it can make you more unhealthy and fatter. On the opposite side, Chinese fast food is good for health and some of them are medicinal dishes. Finally, American fast food also has more benefits than Chinese fast food. In America, there are several famous fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s; it is the most popular one in the world so, it earned lots of money for Americans. This is my favorite food.

interesting place to buy food

Phoebe
EAP 2 WW
Mr. Leverett
Apr 2, 2008

In my opinion, the most interesting place to buy food is at the cinema, I like that feeling the best. I can buying two tickets with my boyfriend and waiting for the film I am going to watch what kind of mood I would have at that time? It would be great. And then, we could go buy some food to eat, such as popcorn, coke and candies, etc. That would be so sweet and interesting. Watching an attractive film, sitting beside my boyfriend and eating good tasting food; in this situation, anyone could become the most happy person in the world. Therefore, I think it is very interesting to buy food in a cinema, not only for eating but also the romantic atmosphere would be prevail ant out in the cinema.

my favorite restaurant

Phoebe
EAP2 WW
Mr. Leverett
April 7, 08

In my home country, my favorite restaurant is a SiChuan food restaurant. This kind of food is named after a province’s name. The SiChuan province is famous for the red chili, which is a small thin red pepper with a very strong hot taste. My favorite restaurant is called Spicy PoPo, a chain of restaurants in my country. There are ten courses on their shop sign there. I often order three of them; fish with boiled soup, spicy Tofu, and hot chicken wing. Fish with boiled soup is the most famous course from SiChuan food. Spicy Tofu is the Tofu with boiled oil. Why is it so famous in Taiwan? When they make the small steamed buns, they have their own procedures. They also adhere their material for each small steamed bun. After they have done the small steamed buns, every single small streamed bun is the same weight and has a lot of soup in it. This restaurant is famous not only in Taiwan but also around the globe. This restaurant also attracts a lot of tourists, especially Japanese. There are also many branches around the world, for example in Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States. Beside small steamed buns, DinThaiFung also sells other foods, such as fried rice, beef noodle, and several different kinds of steamed buns. If I go to this restaurant, I definitely would order original small steamed buns for my first choice. It is a basic item that customers will order. Thus, if you would like to visit Taiwan, please don’t forget to visit this restaurant. DinThaiFung is one of famous restaurants that I suggest for foreigners to go to.

Food; My Interesting Place to Buy Food

I like Wal-Mar. This is because there are lots of fast food chains in the United States. In Japan, we also have McDonald's; however, we have a different menu. The meals served by U.S. restaurant are relatively smaller than the Japanese ones. I was surprised at that because I thought everything in America was huge. I also can say that some American clerks are not as friendly. We, Japanese, are never allowed to behave like that. If we acted like that, we would definitely be fired. Although I can understand it is cultural routine, sometimes it makes me uncomfortable. Yet, I like Americans' cup sizes, which are bigger than that the Japanese. German candy is my favorite food and they have many kinds of flavors such as coke, tropical fruit, apple, grape, and orange. I ate this type of candy when my friend’s father gave me some as a souvenir from Germany. Since I ate it the fist time, I have been a big fan of this candy. Whenever I stop by the shop, I buy one of them and I am satisfied with getting it. I also like dried mango and I used to eat it during break time when I was at my University in Japan. There are a lot of Korean vegetables, fruits, snacks, etc. However there are not exactly all of the same things. It is fortunate that I can buy Korean things in the USA, even those things. When I first went there, I was interested in everything and also excited. I go to Chicago every weekend so when I come back here I drop by there and buy a lot of food for the week. This supermarket does not keep the food long times because many people buy from it. I am interested when I go to Wal-Mart in Carbondale to buy my food. It is a big place and there are many supplies I can see in this place. If anyone goes to big place and sees such a huge supply, he will choose the best. Also, my family takes a long time to see what Wal-Mart may supply for them. My children can play there. Every week I usually go to Wal-Mart and buy everything, I need especially food.

CELL PHONES AND USERS IN TROUBLE( BY JULIO ROA)

FLUENCY EXERCISE # 4
JULIO ROA
INSTRUCTOR: MR.LEVERETT

CELL PHONES AND USERS IN TROUBLE ( BY JULIO ROA)

Cell phones have become very important in communication. Today many people have a craving for having the best and most expensive cell phone. Cell phones are essential in peoples' lives. They play a key role in companies, schools, universities and families. On the other hand, cell phones can also get you into trouble. Sometimes, they ring when least expected. You can see that cell phones ring frequently and interrupt teachers as well as classes. Many teachers regularly tell students to turn off their phones when classes are being taught. Nonetheless, many students do not turn them off, causing interruption in the class as well being a distraction to students. Today, many places warn you to turn off the phones at the entrance by putting up a big sign saying,"Please turn off the phones" Some people prefer not turning off the phones. For instance, in my case i don't to turn off the phone because my family might call me for some emergency going on. Also, many things have happened when phones are off.For example, when an accident happens and you need to call the hospital or someone to help you out.
Many people are alive because of the cell phone. The cell phone has saved their lives in many ways. It is a kind of traditional store in Japan. We can buy some kinds of traditional cheap snacks and candies which we cannot buy at supermarkets or department stores. Old people run most of the stores. They are almost everywhere around residential areas or at near public schools. The shop owners are very kind but sometimes strict concerning manners. They always welcome children with smiling, and they seem to like talking with children. They sometimes tell us about old stories such as about WWⅡ, town history, their personal love story and so on. They look like our grandparents. Many children gather after school with a little money. When I was in elementary school, I went to such a candy store with my friends almost every day. However, I rarely went to the store after graduating from elementary school. My junior high school was also near from the store but I did not go there. I think I became too busy. However, I sometimes visited to the store. So, the same old owner welcomed to me with smiling as usual. People at China Express are kind, so they try to tell ingredients, but I don’t understand all the time; because of my poor vocabulary. Sometimes I can expect what is there, because Japanese food and Chinese food have some similarities. Also, they have the same food name as the Japanese one, nevertheless, they differed from my expectations many times. However, their food is cheap, delicious, and big. They serve stinky dumplings, but the taste is really good, I don’t know how it is possible. I often go there with my friends, and we spend only five to seven dollars each. However, they stuff too much food in a big container, so I never eat all of it. Eating is one of my hobbies. Three points are important to buying some food for me. I want to buy delicious, reasonable, and interesting food. For example, when I go shopping, I will see if the food is fresh or not and I check prices. I feel I am getting a good deal when I do this. I live by my self, so I always choose to shop at good super markets where I can get reasonable and fresh food. Then I can enjoy shopping and cooking. Next, when I go somewhere, like when shopping or traveling, there are chances to find interesting food or restaurants. When I find some interesting food or restaurant, I try to taste then. For example, when I went to Honduras, I ate traditional food in Honduras. I ate traditional dishes of Honduras that included cheese, fried plantains, and beans tortilla. Every thing tasted new. I had not tasted Honduras food before I came to this country. There were nice experiences for me while in Honduras. Therefore traveling is a chance to eat special food for people. Some people visit a lot of places only to eat food. Food attracts us and makes us happy.

An Interesting Food Market

There are many foreigners around Carbondale. Foods are the most important for foreigners because not everybody is used to eating American food. An interesting place for me to buy food is the International Grocery. This shop imports different kinds of international foods to satisfy people who are from other countries, such as Taiwan, Thailand, India, Japan, and China. We can see many foreigners shopping at this shop, especially during the weekends. What I am usually going to buy are cookies, instant noodles and sauces that to make some Taiwanese food. International Grocery is not only for foreigners but also for Americans. Almost all international restaurants in Carbondale are not really the same as that country. If Americans want to try the real taste of other countries food, they might go to international grocery. By the way, this shop also sells cooking books to teach people making international food. When I go to Wal-Mart, I can find a lot of unique American food. First, American food is much more huge than Japanese food. I was surprised at the size at first. Fruit and vegetables are big, and they also make huge food like bread, cakes, and so on. It is difficult to find such a big baked chicken in Japan. The next reason is taste. American food has a stronger taste than food in Asian countries. For example, American sweets are very sweet. Some meat, fish and soup are saltier. I've also done online shopping sometimes. However, consumers need to know that some online shopping malls are fake. So, I want to give some advice about how we can buy safe products. First, you need to check the company's fame. If company is new or there is not much concumer history, you should consider whether the company is a stable market or not. Second, if the market's price is too cheap, you should suspect why the product is cheap before you buy. Last, if you find a nice product, at least think twice before you purchase. Last one is most important because if you buy something too quickly, it might not like it after you use it. So you need to make sure whether you really like it or not. If you consider all of the above, you will buy good products. -MOON-

Fast food

There is no denying that eating fast food in Taiwan is identical with eating it in America. Due to the international market, the restaurants of America’s brands are already occupied all around Taiwan. People can easily eat the American fast food in Taiwan such as McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, and Subway. Every city is saturated with America’s brands, so the market of fast food in Taiwan belongs to them. However, I can not find any other restaurants that sell the fast food around there, because Taiwanese like to eat local food in the nightmarket where vendors sell various delicious food in a fixed place at night. It is the traditional culture and habits. Following the advertising strategy of McDonald’s, children are easily subject to the advertisment. Almost every child knows the brand and always likes to go there. It is a unique phenomenon in Taiwan. With the fast food, moreover, I like to enjoy the hamburger and fried chicken when wanting a foreign meal. The reason is convenience and quickness. To eat those meals, all the good memories that I watched on TV floods back my mind. These we know are not healthy, because they will make us get fat and sick; most of them are unhealthy. But in China, our fast food is different; our fast food is like what you eat at thome. It is really rice and vegetables, but they just cook it already and keep it warm and wait for you come to buy. because students are not rich, after class we go there to eat , and we just need to wait 5 minutes and you can choose anything if you want, and it is very cheap. you can have meat and soup and vegetables and rice, and it is very nice and healthy, it is already contains anything your body needs, and is still healthy and does not have high fat or calories. So this is the reason I like Chinese fast food, not american burgers. It is because nobody wants to be unhealthy, and burgers are very dangerous food for our health.

Fast food

In fact, fast food is bad for our health, not only here but also in my country. I don’t really like eating food. But sometimes I need fast food, example on a busy day. In Korea, there are a lot of shops where you can get fast food like McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, etc. What is different between Korean fast food and American fast food is the amount of oil. There is too much oil in fast foods. When I eat chicken, oil always drops from the food. In Korea it is not common; sometimes I see oil drops like that. By the way I don’t know why the taste is better here for me. I am from the west part of India and there is more oil based and spicy fast food. We have many types of fast food in my city like dal vada, vada pav, batata vada, pani puri, dabeli, spicy sandwiches of different kind, bhel puri and many more. All are spicy and delicious, but my favorite is Vada pav. I always love it when I am hungry. It looks like a burger but does not taste like one. Vada pav is made of two Vada and Pav. Pav is just like a burger’s bread. Vada is made with Bengal gram flour, potatoes, green chili, garlic paste and ginger paste. Vada will go in between pav and is served with green chili paste and tomato ketchup. It is famous in my city as well as in all the western part of India. In America, you can see fast food such as McDonald’s, KFC, Subway and Pizza Hut. The main part of all food is bread. In Thailand, we do not usually eat bread. We eat rice almost every meal. Fast food that is a franchise from other countries is popular only for teenagers because they think they will be cool people when they eat foreign food. Moreover, we also eat noodles at restaurants, or cook them by ourselves. The price of noodles is pretty cheap and we can eat hot soup that makes us feel fresh. In particular, Thai people usually eat Thai food that they can find everywhere, even beside roads. The price of Thai food is much cheaper than foreign fast food in Thailand. Thai food is also healthier than foreign fast food. When I am hungry, I usually go buy some food and eat at the restaurant, or at home. I have already decided in my mind that fast food is not good and not healthy at all. In Japan, Japanese foods and restaurants are healthy and have good foods, but there are fast foods too. I will tell about similar and different points between Japan and America. First, there are some similar things; it is easy to find fast food. Especially, young people often get fast food. The price is very cheap. You can get foods soon. There are seats where you can eat inside, and also you can take it out. Next, differences are that I can tell the truth completely, but I think more Americans often go to fast food in their daily life. The size is totally different. The size in America is huge. I was very very surprised. How big large size is!!! The service and worker’s smile sometimes look and sound boring and lazy. I sometimes saw that worker saying lazily “May I help you?” and “What do you want?" I didn't feel good as a consumer. It is impossible in Japan. They are very friendly and give a perfect smile to each customer. They are nice workers even if it is very busy because of a lot of customers.

Fast Food

Fast food is common in the world these days. Also, there is another difference, which is that is in Jordan there is no service of delivery to one’s home. Fast food causes many troubles like fat and disease. Sometimes I see small kids have big weight due to fast food. As for me, I do not like to eat fast food. If I go outside on a trip, and I do not take food from my home, I may be eating fast food. Today many people prefer buying or ordering online their products of interest. Buying or ordering on the net takes you little time and gives better prices sometimes. Nowadays, you do not need to go to the store to get what you want to buy, you just need to sit at the desk of your computer and order or buy your product of relevance. Using technology helps you save lots of money and time.

Nevertheless, there are many things you have to avoid doing when you are shopping online. For example, some people might ask you to give the pin number of your credit card. Then, you can also have problems with delivery or mystery charges on your credit card. I am not an expert on the business online, but you have to be careful when doing dealing on the internet. However, today fast food like Mcdonalds, KFC and Burger King has become more and more popular around the countries. In my country, Saudi Arabia, people do not eat fast food very much, and that is because fast food is not healthy and it has more fat than home food cooking. Also, fast food restaurants in my country have different menus with different tastes because we cook the fast food in different ways, not like food in the USA or other countries. On the other hand, when I go to a fast food restaurant I do not usually eat meat or chicken; I always prefer to take snacks, ice cream or cookies. Finally, I always care about my health by eating healthy food and I do not prefer my family and I to eat fast food because it affect our body by giving us health problems.

Fast Food in America and in Japan

Fast food companies such as McDonalds, KFC, and Subway are famous in my country, Japan, too. Fast food in Japan is healthier than it is in America because they try to reduce the calories of foods. Japanese people care about the calories a lot, so they need to calculate their calories and show them on the menu. I was surprised by some facts when I went to McDonalds here. I expected too much of fast food here. I thought the foods in McDonalds would be more delicious and cheaper in America than in Japan. In fact, the foods are more delicious and cheaper in Japan. Also, we have more various foods on the menu such as Teriyaki Burger, Tsukimi Burger, Gratin-Croquette Sandwich, Bacon-Lettuce Burger, and so on. Teriyaki Burger is the most famous on the menu in McDonalds. Then, the service in McDonalds is very good in Japan. They are always smiling to the customers. I sometimes go to fast food restaurants when I do not have enough time to eat, when I have time to wait for my friends, or when I do not want to cook something in my home. I think that fast food restaurants are convenient and comfortable to kill time although it is not good for health.

Fast Food

My home, Japan, also has many fast food restaurants. In Japan, there are many fast food chains from America such as Mc Donald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Subway, and of course other chains that Japan created. As you know, Japanese like to eat healthy foods. Therefore, many fast food restaurants show the calories of each food on the menu. Besides, Japanese fast food restaurants usually have more kinds of foods than American fast foods restaurants have. That is to say, foods are more full. Customers who come to the restaurants are also different. In Japan, mainly, young people like to go there because foods are usually cheap and convenient. They usually come to eat foods or take a break for a short time. Families who have children also often come. However, most Japanese families do not love to go there, together. That is a big different thinking about fast food with American families.

Fast Food

Fast food is very convenient for many people who do not have time to wait for the food. How is the fast food different between my country and here? I can tell that actually they are almost the same. The difference is we have a lot of vegetables inside a burger and we also have a rice burger that uses rice instead of bread. When I ordered a burger the first time in the US, the salesman asked me whether I wanted to add topping on it. I was confused about this question at that time. My friend explained to me that he asked whether I wanted to add vegetable or not. Of course I did. In the US, sometimes vegetables do not come together with burgers. We have to ask for them sometimes, because some Americans do not eat vegetables. But, in my country, vegetables always come with burgers; we do not have to ask for them. Another difference is rice burgers. We do sell rice burgers in our fast food restaurants. Because rice is our main food, fast food restaurants use rice instead of bread. Some people want to eat burgers but they also want to have rice. So they can order this kind of burger to satisfy their desire. What I like is that no matter what kind of foods, I just require that my burger must include vegetables.

Fast Food in My Country

Fast food in my country is a little bit different from here. I think it’s different in each country in the world, because they have different culture and taste. There are fast food restaurants, whose taste is similar with Korean food. And the most different thing is price. When I compare just price, it is not too much different from here. However, fast food restaurant’s price is almost the same as other ordinary restaurant’s price in my country. I think there is a difference in America, because Americans need to pay tax and tip. Moreover, ordinary restaurants are more expensive than fast food restaurants in America, basically. Because of this reason, I didn’t go to fast food restaurants in my country, but I often go to fast food restaurants in America.

Favorite breakfast

According to me breakfast is very important to have. If I can’t have breakfast in the morning, my morning won’t start. In my house, tea is part of breakfast and “Paratha” too. Extremely popular with North Indians, Paratha is my favorite breakfast. Paratha can be of many types. Paratha is made from flour. Potatoes, vegetables, could stuff Paratha. My favorite paratha is potato stuffed paratha. It is made with wheat flour. Put the flour, oil/ghee and water into a large mixing bowl, rub together to form a crumbly mix. Boil potatoes in other pot and put green chili paste, ginger paste, cumin seeds, coriander powder and oil. Take other pot and put oil in it and mix all above materials in it. Then make boll sized portion from above mixture. Very lightly flour a rolling board or clean counter surface and roll each ball into a 7-8" circle Heat a griddle and fry the parathas one at a time like this: Put a paratha on the griddle. The paratha is done when both sides are crispy and golden brown. Serve with chilled yogurt and your favourite pickle or chutney.

Food; breakfast

I miss Japanese food a lot. Honestly, I don’t think I will miss American foods when the day comes that I have to leave America. This time, I would like to tell how to cook my favorite beakfast that I have had since I was a kid. Every morning my mom used to make a good breakfast for 3 kids in my family. First, set to be ready to boil the rice in a rice-cooker before you go to bed and you can start to cook soon, because it takes about an hour including washing the rice. Usually, our family and people in Japan eat fish a lot. I used to eat fish at breakfast. My favorite fish that I used to eat were Saba-mackerel and Shake-salmon. Add a salt to the fish and grill it. While you are waiting for the fish, make a Japanese Miso Soup. Miso is soybean paste. Usually, I put soft seaweed, tofu, and mushroom-hackberry in Miso Soup. In my culture, rice is needed at home for every meal every day. Rice, Miso Soup that I explained, fish and Japanese food are very healthy and have nutrition. Tortillas are made of corn.

I like to eat different food fortunately and the US food is not a problem for me. I feel that i can get accustomed to eating food from other countries. For example, i like to eat Mexican tacos, which i considered very delicious.

Talking about food is funny because people very in food taste. Some people like Chinese food and some others like Japanese food. The other funny thing is that some people might laught at your food and see it as ugly food, but the good point is you are enjoying what you are eating.

STUDENT: JULIO ROA ( NICARAGUA)

Eggs

The breakfast I like most is eggs. When I wake up, I feel hungry, soon. If I do not have breakfast, I cannot concentrate on classes in the morning. So, I am healthy and I cannot believe people who do not have breakfast. However, in the morning, nobody has enough time. I do not always enough time to eat beakfast, either. That is why I usually eat a granola bar. Specially now, classes start at a very early time and my room does not have a kitchen, so I cannnot cook breakfast. Howeve, when I was in japan, I usually ate rice, miso soup, nattou, and sunny-side up egg for breakfast. These foods are very east to prepare, healthy, and good tasting. Miso soup is a soup that dissolves miso in hot water, and you put in a tofu and vegetable such as onion slice and cut carrot. Nattou is a kind of bean. We can eat it with rice after just mixing. Besides, sunny-side up egg is egg food. In a frying pan, break eggs and this food is complete. When you see that the chicken is soft and it is ready to eat, you have to move it and put the rice in the same water. Indians believe that having meals with all family members together will make our relations much stronger. My family members can share bad or good experiences with each other, which they had during the day.

My favorite dinner is a South Indian dinner with my family members. It is very healthy food, which is very delicious and spicy. I know how to cook this dish, so sometimes I make this dish for my family, and it is very good to cook sometimes. It makes me very happy while my family members are eating food which I made for them.

Image from Anna Haight at http://mtkilimonjaro.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html.

Welcome to the new Food page!

Posts below this were done in 2005.

Trip Trip

Hello everyone,

Please Please join the CESL outing this weekend!!

We are going to visit my home city...and it is a lot of fun !!

So please sign up and join the fun!!

John~
